| The LVD is the competent authority for animal health, veterinary public health and animal welfare in Mauritius. The LVD acts both a regulatory body and a service provider. The main regulatory activities of the LVD are as follows:  veterinary laboratory diagnosis - risk analysis and epidemiology
- quarantine and border security
- surveillance and early detection
- emergency preparedness and response
- disease prevention, control and eradication
- animal production food safety
- veterinary medicines and biologicals
- antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use
- residue testing, monitoring and management
- animal feed safety
- identification, traceability and movement control
- animal welfare
The function of the LVD mentioned above are based on the critical competencies which the WOAH require from all veterinary authorities. The services provided by the LVD are mainly Ambulatory veterinary services and artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis and veterinary consultancy services
When it comes to health the LVD is responsible for all animals such as laboratory animals, livestock, pets, completion animals, wildlife and feral animals, bees, amphibians, crustaceans and aquatic animals. The LVD is headed by the Assistant Director, Livestock and Veterinary who is a veterinary surgeon registered under the Veterinary council Act 2020. The Head of the LVD is assisted by principal veterinary officer, Senior veterinary officers and veterinary officers who shall performs their duties
