SERVICES PROVIDED BY NPPO - PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW FOR SERVICE USERS
Seed health testing and monitoring of imported and locally produced seeds.
(a)
Seed health testing (SHT) of imported seeds is essential for screening against seed borne diseases of quarantine or of economic importance. Disease outbreaks can be spread through seed borne pathogens present superficially on the seed coat or deeply encrusted in seed coat crevices, the endosperm or embryo. Seed health testing is essential for the detection of such pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes under laboratory conditions, greenhouse and field conditions for disease prevention.
(b)
SHT is also carried out also on locally produced seeds (seeds taken from Barkly ES), prior to sale. The testing is done on seeds which are particularly known to be affected by seed borne diseases of economic importance.
For all consignment of seeds imported, a sample has to be submitted to the NPPO for testing of seed borne diseases under laboratory conditions and greenhouse conditions. This may imply a time period of 15 days before final quarantine clearance is given.
