Corporate Status
The Irrigation Authority is a para-statal organization set up under the Irrigation Authority Act No. 39 of 1978 and functions under the aegis of Ministry of  Agro Industry and Food Security.
Objects of the Authority
(a)  to study the development of irrigation and to make proposals to the Central Water Authority for the preparation of schemes for the irrigation of specific areas;
(b)  to implement and manage irrigation projects in every irrigation area and to do all other acts incidental thereto; and
(c)   to undertake research into the optimum use of water made available by the Central Water Authority for irrigation.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
o    Since 1978, IA has been instrumental in the setting up of 17 Public Sector irrigation projects all over the island for the planters’ community.  Today the Irrigation Authority is managing some 3913 ha of land owned by about 5188 small planters and 6 sugar estates/miller planters irrigated by different methods of irrigation, namely overhead (sprinkler, centre pivot, solid set and dragline) and sub-surface (drip).
o    IA is contributing towards food security by providing irrigation facilities to some 500 ha of lands and producing some 15,000 tons vegetables/onions for the net income of about Rs 200 m to the planters.
 
The Main activities of the Irrigation Authority include:
(a)          Carrying out feasibility studies for new irrigation projects;
(b)          Investigation, planning, design, construction, supervision and implementation of irrigation projects;
(c)          operation and maintenance of irrigation projects and doing all acts incidental thereto;
(d)          Investigation on the optimum use of water for irrigation;
(e)          formulation of policies relating to irrigated agriculture;
(f)          evaluation of ongoing irrigation projects and coordination of research;
(g)          modernization and upgrading of old schemes so as to improve service to the planters;
(h)          training of farmers on different methods of irrigation and use of irrigation equipment;
(i)           provision of support to Water Users’ Associations and Cooperative Societies for the proper running of irrigation operations;
(j)           provision of incentives to planters.
INCENTIVES TO PLANTERS’ COMMUNITY
      a)    Provision of irrigation at subsidised rates to planters within irrigation areas under the jurisdiction of Irrigation Authority;
b)    Provision of  drippers at duty-free prices to planters within irrigation areas under the jurisdiction of Irrigation Authority;
c)    Certification through the  Ministry of Agro Industry & Food Security for remission of duties to planters for purchase of irrigation equipment and goods;
d)    Recommendation for partial reimbursement of pumping costs to planters using electrically driven pumps for irrigation of food crops; and
e)    Advice to planters on matters related to irrigation and water management.
